Green Organization Designation

In 2013, West Elmwood Housing was honored to be designated as a NeighborWorks America Green Organizaion.  The designation means that WEHDC has achieved environmental sustainability benchmarks in all areas of its operations and lines of business.

Sustainability focuses on reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint, reducing water use, and efficient heating systems.  Green principles lead to a healthier environment and also lower costs for consumers, home owners, businesses and our society in general.

Some of West Elmwood Housing's green achievements include:

  • Installation of solar panels on the roof of Westfield Commons, our mixed-use 16-unit historical rehab project which also houses West Elmwood Housing's office
  • Providing a Green Fit Home Loan that enables home owners to make improvements that would lead to more energy-efficiency, health and safety features in their homes
  • Certified staff in green construction principles, home audits and testing for environmental factors, health, safety, and energy efficiency
  • Incorporation of green design principles into new construction, as well as teaching a green curriculum in our home ownership classes
  • Tracking energy consumption across our rental units
  • Creating policies that reduce the carbon footprint of the West Elmwood Housing office, such as making much of our operation paperless
  • Promoting environmental health and sustainability through our Community Building programs, including working with neighbors to eliminate illegal dumping, creating new community gardens, and increasing tree canopy and quality of parks and outdoor green spaces throughout the neighborhood

In addition, West Elmwood Housing maintains a list of other green organizations and resources available in our local area and state.  Contact us for any of these resources.
