Community Organizing West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation originally began as a group of residents who built power through identifying a problem in the community and sharing their ideas and solutions on solving it. Our success as a community-based organization is based upon our grassroots community organizing efforts over the years. We assessed the issues that needed to be targeted and through negotiation, confrontation and building relationships; we established an agency that has been anchored in enabling people for homeownership and community building.
Our Community Organizing department now addresses the following issues through organized meetings and activities:
SummerSweeps 2006
Youth Programs
Professional development, financial literacy, youth committee, SummerSweeps, Thanksgiving Baskets Giveaways, field trips, and more.
Environmental Issues
Annual community clean-ups, tree-planting, education, and more.
Block Association
Crime prevention, crime watch, police relations, holiday's lights, block clean-ups, leadership development, empowerment and community activities.
Economic Development
Family financial literacy, Youth Entrepreneurship, and Cranston Street Business.
